9:30 am on a sunny Saturday, the 23rd of April 2011. People are gathering to start the first ever <b>Hadfield ecumenical Passion Play</b>. The brainchild of Caroline Phillips from Hadfield's Methodist Church, it has been a collaboration between the Roman Catholic, Anglican and Methodist churches in Hadfield, Derbyshire. The idea was mooted about a year ago, and now, after weeks of rehearsals, costume making and preparation, everything is ready.<br />
<br />
Our play has been well advertised too: St Charles and St Andrews Primary Schools both ran competitions for paintings of the Easter theme, and we used the wonderful paintings for our posters (there were about 20 different posters produced).<br />
<br />

The actors have all arrived and are changing into their costumes. They are of all ages from young teenagers to young at heart seventy somethings.<br />
<br />
Even the Peggy the donkey was there (from the Donkey Sanctuary at Buxton).<br />
<br />
The musicians gather; mostly the talented young people from St Charles RC Church, but there are a few from the Methodist church as well, and our cornet player is from St Andrews Anglican church.<br />
<br />
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgSDO6etjcs94oMuxkqpWeybJvSVat_MqdUVDrP-LjnpncspcLTn4PXjQ0MjsvrZcwfEx0U1Wm4xIfeFQUcvtAfXqkKFc7LbpQtl_40z8hSFgTU_D0BTfMBSAlScT5yY4OdYpdFb-11Mob_/s1600/Getting_ready.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="clear: right; float: right; margin-bottom: 1em; margin-left: 1em;"><img border="0" height="290" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgSDO6etjcs94oMuxkqpWeybJvSVat_MqdUVDrP-LjnpncspcLTn4PXjQ0MjsvrZcwfEx0U1Wm4xIfeFQUcvtAfXqkKFc7LbpQtl_40z8hSFgTU_D0BTfMBSAlScT5yY4OdYpdFb-11Mob_/s400/Getting_ready.jpg" width="400" /></a><br />
<br />
The audience starts to arrive as well and Caroline moves around, costumes over her arm, asking the children if they want to wear some and have some musical instruments (tamborines, etc.) and palm leaves to wave. Several take up the offer with great enthusiasm.<br />
<br />
It's now 10:30 and the moment arrives. Jesus and his followers gather in a group in front of St Charles church. the narrator stands nearby. Another small group stand next to the church with the donkey. The musicians line up near the gate and the crowd lines up alongside. Caroline makes a brief announcement and we're off...<br />

The Passion Play commences: It's Palm Sunday. The narrator sets the scene: Jesus and His followers are approaching Jerusalem.<br />
<br />
Jesus tells his followers to go and fetch a donkey that they will find in the village (Bethany) and what to say if they are challenged.<br />
<br />
Two disciples go and find the donkey. The donkey's owner challenges them and they respond with Jesus' message: "<b>The Master needs it</b>". The owner gladly releases the donkey and they take it back to Jesus.<br />

<br />
The actors process out of the church grounds and take the donkey to a nearby field. The musicians play <b>Majesty, We have King who rides a donkey</b>, and <b>Make Way</b>.<br />
<br />
Children wave palm leaves as the actors process and then we all follow as they walk down Carriage Drive towards the nursing home.<br />
<br />
It is a triumphant <b>Palm Sunday</b>.<br />

<br />
In Jerusalem the crowds follow Jesus, still waving their palm leaves. Jesus has entered Jerusalem on a triumphant Palm Sunday.<br />
<br />
But now we move on.<br />
<br />
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEg1XajPAvG4WCrMFbpaw2WzWb0gAokHJjSPRolSyKj45ncoml9tIihDMPGWACRUzwU9jAUZLMWNcju4njbGMz2CivRkxT9-WxI7IipCaZVaAtRcn0igxJivEwG2xGvgLuFZYfbRbQoa-hwd/s1600/The+priest.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="clear: right; float: right; margin-bottom: 1em; margin-left: 1em;"><img border="0" height="263" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEg1XajPAvG4WCrMFbpaw2WzWb0gAokHJjSPRolSyKj45ncoml9tIihDMPGWACRUzwU9jAUZLMWNcju4njbGMz2CivRkxT9-WxI7IipCaZVaAtRcn0igxJivEwG2xGvgLuFZYfbRbQoa-hwd/s400/The+priest.jpg" width="400" /></a><br />
<br />
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjg-mPxnTVRMODsrgdrHTGz6Yv6wSe-F5J2jL2-H2CRgHXtIIf5S0CqtNJhMAjZ1SxNH_INI2nXTajL-Jq1-VlwCbzlxClq5qb6ORG5gYh-X_TY5a78f0NkPuEOy8FCXXeKj8-dp3UxGjd5/s1600/prepare_room.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="clear: right; float: right; margin-bottom: 1em; margin-left: 1em;"><img border="0" height="295" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjg-mPxnTVRMODsrgdrHTGz6Yv6wSe-F5J2jL2-H2CRgHXtIIf5S0CqtNJhMAjZ1SxNH_INI2nXTajL-Jq1-VlwCbzlxClq5qb6ORG5gYh-X_TY5a78f0NkPuEOy8FCXXeKj8-dp3UxGjd5/s400/prepare_room.JPG" width="400" /></a><br />
<br />
<br />
<br />
<br />
<br />
<br />
We gather outside the nursing home. At one end of the car park are gathered Jesus and His followers. At the other are the priests and Roman soldiers.<br />
<br />
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjG9RmSWX71g2NcSOYQ2R_f1n4guBRDqlznZqOXPykV76zh_wTEYSkaf8FshZFLvpSRYCrH0O9TznnIEpix253Tu1txX7sET6NgxM-XQ7G3HseeyksW2ok0RR-rj4aSsn1Pwmuc2VveGKNz/s1600/Said_Judas_to_mary.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="clear: left; float: left; margin-bottom: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"></a><br />
<br />
Now Jesus is telling His disciples that He won't be trying to "take over" like the expected Jewish Messiah.<br />
<br />
<br />
<br />
<br />
<br />
He then sends them ahead to prepare the room for their Passover meal.<br />
<br />
<br />
<br />
Meanwhile Judas has started to doubt Him and goes to the priests to sell Him out.<br />
<br />
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjG9RmSWX71g2NcSOYQ2R_f1n4guBRDqlznZqOXPykV76zh_wTEYSkaf8FshZFLvpSRYCrH0O9TznnIEpix253Tu1txX7sET6NgxM-XQ7G3HseeyksW2ok0RR-rj4aSsn1Pwmuc2VveGKNz/s1600/Said_Judas_to_mary.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="clear: right; float: right; margin-bottom: 1em; margin-left: 1em;"><img border="0" height="230" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjG9RmSWX71g2NcSOYQ2R_f1n4guBRDqlznZqOXPykV76zh_wTEYSkaf8FshZFLvpSRYCrH0O9TznnIEpix253Tu1txX7sET6NgxM-XQ7G3HseeyksW2ok0RR-rj4aSsn1Pwmuc2VveGKNz/s400/Said_Judas_to_mary.jpg" width="400" /></a><br />
<br />
Things are looking rather bleak. The musicians play Sydney Carter's "<b>Said Judas to Mary</b>".<br />

The actors playing Jesus and His followers, plus the Narrator and the musicians went into the nursing home where - in the dining room - Jesus and His disciples sat at the table and enacted the Last Supper.<br />
<br />
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEj_Uukj0o1UKDxhtNv7nJkzd6EGUjbibk92SCxySBl2cNaxAZXbtiLY4O5fY_qbmqZzLhrIUyFMez7Cvr1BpT020bChxVzyP5dRwX4i6kavaWKTzzzOvQAg-qLEVeVxRaki500sa6Y75-2C/s1600/LastSupper.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="clear: right; float: right; margin-bottom: 1em; margin-left: 1em;"><img border="0" height="266" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEj_Uukj0o1UKDxhtNv7nJkzd6EGUjbibk92SCxySBl2cNaxAZXbtiLY4O5fY_qbmqZzLhrIUyFMez7Cvr1BpT020bChxVzyP5dRwX4i6kavaWKTzzzOvQAg-qLEVeVxRaki500sa6Y75-2C/s400/LastSupper.jpg" width="400" /></a><br />
<br />
<br />
Several of the nursing home residents - many in wheelchairs - were brought in to see and to listen to the music (we played "<b>I belong to the family of God</b>" and "<b>Break the bread and pour the wine</b>".<br />
<br />
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjhQBYrz1wcP8f8jln-hrcext8DQNPZeZy-HcWUMv5pKJyQRsLdo0W64-_f8GC2YOUc3QTdsyeY-HsW3kRpYGDpS1Qc4Jd9ifawfLOSYpNKZtiPmi_-XUQVL6tE8OBqd_omsArYcigWcIpo/s1600/LS_music.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="clear: right; float: right; margin-bottom: 1em; margin-left: 1em;"><img border="0" height="262" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjhQBYrz1wcP8f8jln-hrcext8DQNPZeZy-HcWUMv5pKJyQRsLdo0W64-_f8GC2YOUc3QTdsyeY-HsW3kRpYGDpS1Qc4Jd9ifawfLOSYpNKZtiPmi_-XUQVL6tE8OBqd_omsArYcigWcIpo/s400/LS_music.JPG" width="400" /></a>Outside a second narrator told the crowds what was happening as they looked in through the windows into the dining room.<br />
<br />
The Last Supper is one of Christianity's central and most important events - which we celebrate as Communion - and it was extremely moving to watch our young (18 year old) Jesus enact this event with such humility and meaning.<br />
<br />

The Garden of Gethsemane<h3><a name='more'></a></h3>From the nursing home we moved back out into Carriage Drive and crossed the road to a small piece of park with several shady trees. Here our actors presented the Garden of Gethsemane scene.<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjT39b20MNUdTZrJEIsC9Ww0A61iZYfFWRnVoeYU552RMsFtEPsPT8IKOM0mNwrXCmZ8GIMU65tOlx5-Vattu8vd2uiIFQm0L75PCFoXjn-aobrrtVu_1NgzYM3jMCKTDrtGlaULZYaw4qE/s1600/sleeping.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="clear: right; float: right; margin-bottom: 1em; margin-left: 1em;"><img border="0" height="242" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjT39b20MNUdTZrJEIsC9Ww0A61iZYfFWRnVoeYU552RMsFtEPsPT8IKOM0mNwrXCmZ8GIMU65tOlx5-Vattu8vd2uiIFQm0L75PCFoXjn-aobrrtVu_1NgzYM3jMCKTDrtGlaULZYaw4qE/s400/sleeping.JPG" width="400" /></a></div><br />
After supper, Jesus and His followers left the city and went out to the Garden of Gethsemane. Jesus and His followers gathered under the trees and He asked them to watch while He prayed.<br />
<br />
<br />
<br />
He moved a little way and prayed to His Father, that this fate might be taken away from Him, but then accepting that whatever the Father willed must be so.<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjUcoItacC5fdpWHjd8KXhukdMDMcVFDf7X_-gQnkwq_vo-nU9hQ8C3cccEU-rIzqeDY2M13jBx5HOJiJeWr83zvthr9vUADI4nSirVkHTZJHP2Fcrjs8yNaqcChkMWgmnoO9APumrwlUuh/s1600/Jesus_alone.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="clear: right; float: right; margin-bottom: 1em; margin-left: 1em;"><img border="0" height="300" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjUcoItacC5fdpWHjd8KXhukdMDMcVFDf7X_-gQnkwq_vo-nU9hQ8C3cccEU-rIzqeDY2M13jBx5HOJiJeWr83zvthr9vUADI4nSirVkHTZJHP2Fcrjs8yNaqcChkMWgmnoO9APumrwlUuh/s400/Jesus_alone.JPG" width="400" /></a></div>He returns to His followers to find them all asleep, wakes them and berates them (gently), asking that they stay awake while He prays a little more.<br />
<br />
But they fall asleep again. Jesus comes back and voices His disappointment once again, that they could not stay with Him.<br />
<br />
<br />
<br />
<br />
<br />

<br />
Peter vehemently denies this could ever happen.<br />
<br />
The musicians play the Taize song "<b>Watch and pray</b>".<br />
<br />
It's all a poignant reminder that even those closest to Jesus could not support Him as he wished and needed, and a sobering thought for us today, that we too have a duty to watch and pray.<br />

Jesus is arrested in the Garden of Gethsemane and then taken to see the priests (in Caiaphas, the High Priest's house), King Herod and Pilate for trial.<br />
<br />
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgt8hW2otj2EvqNhBW9NuoJ6YwPEtdL5rpvL9yKo4idpgbCuWEexHIyv8Lbk_MbMOYZqmWfn4Xtd59TcVALs5j3TAKY9FpiOaRnQmbCu8RCqPM9EycmEUkke9_VEqK-h_srBg_LH9UhKGdi/s1600/Jesus-and-high-priest.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="clear: right; float: right; margin-bottom: 1em; margin-left: 1em;"><img border="0" height="262" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgt8hW2otj2EvqNhBW9NuoJ6YwPEtdL5rpvL9yKo4idpgbCuWEexHIyv8Lbk_MbMOYZqmWfn4Xtd59TcVALs5j3TAKY9FpiOaRnQmbCu8RCqPM9EycmEUkke9_VEqK-h_srBg_LH9UhKGdi/s400/Jesus-and-high-priest.JPG" width="400" /></a>At first he is questioned by the priests who want to accuse Him of blasphemy (which, under Jewish Law carries a death sentence). They bring false witnesses to testify against Him, and also try to taunt Him to admit He is masquerading as the Messiah, and calling Himself the King of the Jews. This is set on the Merseybank Road playing fields.<br />
<br />
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhQyUl9TpAjkFUHBBA_IREcRYCupVmxVtUHdikUtaGJDRmqg4QGsNpeHw8hNGhNgWslpQupChmYWziiyKSO2IVLp-vt3nA-9pLkaoySo07T4HOEwP-z0Hzb8Jb23vKawvIaA7f8R75OUZHB/s1600/Peters_denial.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="clear: right; float: right; margin-bottom: 1em; margin-left: 1em;"><img border="0" height="262" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhQyUl9TpAjkFUHBBA_IREcRYCupVmxVtUHdikUtaGJDRmqg4QGsNpeHw8hNGhNgWslpQupChmYWziiyKSO2IVLp-vt3nA-9pLkaoySo07T4HOEwP-z0Hzb8Jb23vKawvIaA7f8R75OUZHB/s400/Peters_denial.JPG" width="400" /></a>As Jesus is being questioned, Peter watches and waits in the outer court next to Caiaphas' house. A serving woman and some of the men there recognise him and say he was one of Jesus's followers. Afraid of what might happen, Peter denies this: and then the cock crows twice (signalled by the cornet) - Peter remembers Jesus' prophecy. (The musicians sing Sydney Carter's "<b>Bitter was the night</b>").<br />
<br />
<br />
The priests decide Jesus is guilty of blasphemy, and He is dragged off to see Pilate.<br />

Before Pilate<a name='more'></a>Our Passion Play procession now continues up Merseybank Road and stops in the green outside Hadfield Infant's school. Here is the setting for the trial against Pilate.<br />
<br />
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjOc7nTAJ4Q4goiKFHy9c2rMcemQeZq08G7Skf-930AxHNLqoI4Aq4Z6y-f7rzQLYobLNzZRXZcpzd1P7gcmaIcdr_kqTcxc0ZteNz27RopP186TXmzb_SK5qmbEKX-mdrjLQGb261S0KGu/s1600/Jesus-and-Pilate1.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="clear: right; float: right; margin-bottom: 1em; margin-left: 1em;"><img border="0" height="311" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjOc7nTAJ4Q4goiKFHy9c2rMcemQeZq08G7Skf-930AxHNLqoI4Aq4Z6y-f7rzQLYobLNzZRXZcpzd1P7gcmaIcdr_kqTcxc0ZteNz27RopP186TXmzb_SK5qmbEKX-mdrjLQGb261S0KGu/s400/Jesus-and-Pilate1.JPG" width="400" /></a><br />
<br />
<br />
Jesus is dragged to see Pilate by the soldiers.<br />
<br />
<br />
<br />
<br />
<br />
<br />
<br />
<br />
<br />
A cornet solo announces Pilate.<br />
<br />
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjXAZ6K09UtrR-o0hpmnYDkVzlPa3sUPGYFzje_vd_0YFVmCtsbY1RDuKWbIceqL7yryhCJ_T4T3Q3L7vlEToSn2gz5VNPz7_kKgtlmPjn4vjbLuW5Dzjx8Cuu1npFDYdH16puGUaSxTAx4/s1600/Jesus-and-Pilate2.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="clear: right; float: right; margin-bottom: 1em; margin-left: 1em;"><img border="0" height="268" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjXAZ6K09UtrR-o0hpmnYDkVzlPa3sUPGYFzje_vd_0YFVmCtsbY1RDuKWbIceqL7yryhCJ_T4T3Q3L7vlEToSn2gz5VNPz7_kKgtlmPjn4vjbLuW5Dzjx8Cuu1npFDYdH16puGUaSxTAx4/s400/Jesus-and-Pilate2.jpg" width="400" /></a><br />
<br />
<br />
A very regal Pilate questions Jesus: "are you King of the Jews?". Pilate can find no evidence that Jesus is guilty of any crime so appeals to the crowds. He asks them if they want to free Jesus, as it is the custom for Roman officials to free a Jewish prisoner every Passover. But the crowd yell "<b>Free Barabbas!</b>" Pilate asks what they want him to do about Jesus. The crowd shouts "<b>Crucify Him!</b>"<br />
<br />
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjj3lRFVaR7gSpvN8VKbtJmsGKbVQu46ZRxmqIlnNYq9D1PSQYDRSZJckwfIlJYB7IkyyGGmd41FITux1o0qhcSiQPxTozmgzC8HjN-MIlt__59DVLz4bqZwDp54JfSwtBFrK91fhObWiTD/s1600/arrested.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="clear: right; float: right; margin-bottom: 1em; margin-left: 1em;"><img border="0" height="400" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjj3lRFVaR7gSpvN8VKbtJmsGKbVQu46ZRxmqIlnNYq9D1PSQYDRSZJckwfIlJYB7IkyyGGmd41FITux1o0qhcSiQPxTozmgzC8HjN-MIlt__59DVLz4bqZwDp54JfSwtBFrK91fhObWiTD/s400/arrested.JPG" width="302" /></a><br />
<br />
So Pilate orders Jesus's death. The soldiers drag Him off to be crucified. We sing "<b>My song is Love unknown</b>" (verses 2 and 3).<br />

The soldiers drag Jesus up the ginnel next to Hadfield Infants' School, and cross Hadfield Road to the green outside the Spinner's Arms. This is the setting for the crucifixion.<br />
<br />
Onlookers taunt Jesus: "<b>come down from the cross and save your self</b>", and the soldiers put Him on the cross. Then they throw dice to share out His clothes. <br />
<br />
We sing two versus of "<b>Were you there when they crucified my Lord?</b>"<br />
<br />
<br />
<br />
Jesus prays on the cross: "<b>Eloi, Eloi lema sabachthani</b>" (meaning My God, my God why did you abandon me), but as He breathes His last a Roman soldier who was standing by the cross saw how Jesus died and said "This man was really the son of God".<br />
<br />
We sing again "<b>Were you there when they crucified my Lord?</b>" and also "<b>There is a green hill far away</b>".<br />
<br />
<br />
<br />
<br />
<br />
<br />
<br />
<br />
<br />
The soldiers take Jesus from the cross and carry Him away to be buried.<br />
<br />
These few words and pictures cannot begin to describe how hard-hitting was this enactment. There was no blood or gore, but it had far greater impact than Mel Gibson's movie for all its hyper realism.<br />

The final leg of our procession takes us along Walker Street and up to the entrance to St Andrew's CofE Church - the setting for the resurrection.<br />
<br />
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEiU-nfSRKCplPb_oX_qhQh6dQV3zRgWqfl-iT9NkaqFn8P9nRfczu_lOW1Sep3fUtXEBrM9rHZwy7msK0_gtmeOSor_iCo9XcR2lEIPz7tgAuEzFt1IUOSUj8HEZP73Kkk2oAgiSZQ09UYU/s1600/100_1150.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="clear: right; float: right; margin-bottom: 1em; margin-left: 1em;"><img border="0" height="295" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEiU-nfSRKCplPb_oX_qhQh6dQV3zRgWqfl-iT9NkaqFn8P9nRfczu_lOW1Sep3fUtXEBrM9rHZwy7msK0_gtmeOSor_iCo9XcR2lEIPz7tgAuEzFt1IUOSUj8HEZP73Kkk2oAgiSZQ09UYU/s400/100_1150.jpg" width="400" /></a>Here we see the two Marys on their way to Jesus' tomb - but there is an earthquake, the stone is rolled away from the tomb and the guards stupefied. An angel appears and tells them "<b>you must not be afraid I know you are looking for Jesus, who was crucified. He is not here, he has been raised from death just as he has said. Go quickly now -- he is going to Gallilee ahead of you, there you will see him.</b>"<br />
<br />
We sing the joyful song by Paul Field "<b>Roll the Stone away</b>".<br />
<br />
As they leave the tomb (the entrance to the church) and walk back towards the gardens, Jesus appears to them and says "<b>Peace be with you</b>".<br />
<br />
We sing our final songs, "<b>Praise Him</b>" and "<b>Lord of the Dance</b>" - several actors and members of the audience join in dancing.<br />
